On this day:

Big Brother is Watching You

Just finshed reading 1984 by George Orwell. A good book which brings up some interesting questions. In many ways, when I read 1984, I am dealing with three time periods: Orwell's reality in 1949 England, when the book was published; the fictional time in 1984 Oceania; and our own reality in 2004 America, and I can't help but compare and contrast the book to my own experiences. Some of the things that really got me thinking are.
--Technology: surveillance, as a form of control
--Language: thoughtcrime, doublethink, Newspeak vs. Oldspeak, Winston's job, Syme’s job, Winston’s journal
--Sexuality and the Party
--Freedom: “Freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two make four. If that is granted, all else follows, the “freedom” of the Proles
--“Who controls the past controls the future: who controls the present controls the past.”
Discuss. :D
